I DON'T EVER HAVE A BAD DAY
The measure of how I want to be remembered as a coach goes far beyond wins and losses. I want to see my players turn out to be good fathers, good husbands, good workers. It's a victory when I get to see them later as leaders of their families. That's the record I care about. When they call me and tell me they're getting married, when they invite me to their wedding, when they ask for my opinion, when they confide in me, when they open their hearts to me. Those are wins I care about.
From a young age, we are conditioned to seek approval. Over time, we develop a built-in mechanism to check outside ourselves to see if everything is okay. But we are not limited to that reflexive system. We have another choice: purpose. Purpose is the belief that you are alive to do something. In short, your purpose matters to you. Rather than looking outside ourselves to see if others approve, we can rewire that mechanism to turn inward and check against our purpose. Purpose, rather than approval, becomes the filter through which we make decisions, establish priorities, and make choices.
